Today (April 27th, 2013) at the #ontsm Ontario Social Media Symposium, educators came together to dialogue about Social Media. Thanks @royanlee and @taniasterling for facilitating such a great experience!
Thinking about the engaging dialogue throughout the day, I couldn’t help but contemplate if what we were really talking about is the importance of embracing a Design Thinking way of being; having a “mind frame” (Hattie, 2012) which would enable the learning and teaching opportunities within our classrooms, schools, institutions and organizations to be ones where teachers
“see learning through the eyes of their students” and “when there are active, passionate, and engaging people (teacher, students, peers) participating in the act of learning … teachers becom[ing] learners of their own teaching, and when students become their own teachers. When students become their own teachers, they exhibit the self-regulatory attributes that seem most desirable for learners (self-monitoring, self-evaluation, self-assessment, self-teaching)” (Hattie, 2012 pp.14-20).
Is this what we are hoping to achieve with our learners when engaging with Social Media; when Social Media is at the heart of and integral to the spaces within learning, both designed and emergent opportunities, in these places we call school?
